The main theme for Architecture Week 2007 is “How Green is Our Space?”, looking at all aspects of the built environment from climate change, green roofs, recycled building materials and sustainable design through to physical green spaces within the built environment.
Buildings contribute around 50% of the UK's carbon emissions, with houses making up 25% of that. This is an opportunity to raise public awareness, within local communities across the Eastern region, of some of the key measures we can all take to reduce carbon emissions and slow down the rate of climate change.
Even if your event does not have a green theme, you can still be a part of Architecture Week, the main aim of which is to inspire people to think creatively about the spaces around them.
Why take part?
Architecture Week offers the opportunity for people to learn more about architecture and understand their own role in improving the environment through architecture. This is an opportunity for people from every sector to join in and celebrate the built environment. This high profile initiative attracts significant attention from the media and the public.
Architecture Week 2006 was the Eastern Region’s most successful year in terms of the number, quality and diversity of architecture and art related events. A spectacular variety of RIBA and regional award-winning buildings opened to the public and guided walking of towns and cities were a highly popular type of event. Many school children were involved in fun and educational design competitions and artists across the region gave talks and exhibited their work to the public.
Architecture Week provides an important opportunity for people of all ages to enjoy, explore and raise their expectations of contemporary architecture; and to find ways to improve the built environment.
Wherever you live in the East of England, and whatever aspect of architecture and the built environment you're most interested in, we hope the events, exhibitions, talks, walks and workshops in this guide will give you a chance to celebrate the beautiful, ingenious, quirky, dramatic, intimate and historic buildings in the region.
